Chhatbir Zoo: Punjab’s Wildlife Wonderland

Nestled in the heart of Punjab, about 20 kilometers from Chandigarh, lies one of North India’s most captivating wildlife destinations—Chhatbir Zoo, officially known as the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park. Spanning over 202 hectares of lush greenery and diverse habitats, the zoo is not just a sanctuary for wildlife, but a cherished recreational hub for families, students, nature lovers, and tourists alike. Whether you’re an animal enthusiast or simply looking to enjoy a day amidst nature, Chhatbir Zoo offers a remarkable blend of education, conservation, and adventure.

The zoo was named after Mahendra Chaudhary, the then Governor of Punjab, who envisioned this Zoo. It was in honour of his efforts and contributions towards wildlife preservation and environmental awareness in the region. Under his leadership, the idea of creating a modern zoological park to educate the public and protect wildlife took shape. Since its inception, the zoo has grown not only in size but also in stature, becoming a premier destination for wildlife tourism in northern India.

Established in 1977, Chhatbir Zoo transformed the once-barren land near Chhat village located in Derabassi tehsil, into a flourishing haven for flora and fauna. Over the decades, the zoo has expanded significantly in terms of biodiversity and infrastructure, and stands as the largest zoological park in north-western India. Its vast area allows more than 125 species of animals and birds to roam in relatively open enclosures, mimicking their natural habitats and offering a more humane alternative to traditional caged displays.

A Thriving Ecosystem of Animals and Birds

Today, Chhatbir Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals, birds, and reptiles representing over 125 species from around the globe. From the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger and Asiatic Lion to exotic birds like the emu, ostrich and colourful peasants the zoo boasts a spectacular array of wildlife. The avian section, in particular, draws bird watchers and photographers from far and wide, thanks to its walk-in aviary that allows for close interaction with a wide variety of bird species.

A Magnet for Tourists Across Northern India
Thanks to its strategic location and well-maintained facilities, Chhatbir Zoo draws around 2 thousand visitors per day, especially from neighboring states like Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. This number increases significantly during public Holidays and vacations. School excursions, family outings, and even eco-tourism events are regularly held at the zoo, reinforcing its role as a major educational and leisure destination.

Eco-Friendly Travel Inside the Zoo
To minimize the ecological footprint and enhance the visitor experience, Chhatbir Zoo offers battery-operated vehicles that provide guided tours through the park. These eco-friendly vehicles are especially beneficial for elderly visitors and families with young children, ensuring everyone can explore the zoo comfortably.

Entry and Accessibility
Entry to Chhatbir Zoo is reasonably priced at Rs 50 and Rs 100 per head for children below 12 and adults respectively. There are also separate tickets for battery operated carts and wildlife safaris priced at Rs 60 and Rs 75 respectively per head. The zoo is open throughout the week except on Mondays, and ample parking and food facilities are available on-site.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal months to visit Chhatbir Zoo are from October to March since during these timings the weather is more pleasant for walking through the open-air sections of the zoo. During this period, animals are also more active, and the lush greenery of the park is at its most vibrant.

Adopt an Animal: A Heartwarming Initiative
The Animal Adoption Program at Chhatbir Zoo is a noble initiative that allows individuals, schools, and corporations to contribute directly to the welfare of zoo animals. By adopting an animal, donors help cover the cost of food, medical care, and enrichment for a chosen species. In return, they receive a certificate, complimentary passes, and public recognition. It’s a perfect way for wildlife lovers to form a meaningful connection with the animals they care about.

Must-See Attractions
Chhatbir Zoo offers far more than just animal exhibits. Some of its standout attractions include:
• Lion Safari: One of the most thrilling experiences at the zoo, the lion safari allows visitors to ride through a fenced reserve where lions roam freely in a semi-natural habitat.

• Deer Safari: A more tranquil ride through herds of spotted and sambar deer grazing peacefully in open fields.

• Dinosaur Park: A fun, educational exhibit for children and adults alike featuring life-sized models of dinosaurs with facts about prehistoric life.

• Wildlife Cinema Hall: An indoor facility that screens documentaries and films related to wildlife conservation and animal behavior.

• Walk-In Aviary: This 750-metre long walk-in aviary is one of the largest of its kind in India, where visitors can walk through an enclosed area filled with exotic and indigenous birds flying overhead. There are six theme-based exhibits with various landscapes that enhance the beauty of the exhibits. These include terrestrial, rock and duck, woodland, Japanese trail, rainforest and non-flying.

• Modernized Crocodile Enclosure: A new addition offering a more natural setting and better viewing angles for observing these ancient reptiles.

• Souvenir Shop: Visitors can purchase wildlife-themed mementos and support the zoo’s conservation efforts.

Chhatbir Zoo is much more than a typical animal park—it is a living classroom, a conservation center, and a peaceful retreat rolled into one. Whether you’re marveling at lions on a safari, feeding birds in the aviary, or learning about wildlife preservation in the cinema hall, every visit leaves a lasting impression. So, the next time you’re near Chandigarh or anywhere in Punjab, don’t miss the chance to explore this dynamic blend of nature and nurture.
