Punjab makes AI mainstream in schools

Everyday Life with AI

Your phone unlocks with a glance. A voice assistant reminds you of meetings. Social media curates your feed, showing exactly what you want to see. Later, you stream a movie, and the platform suggests the perfect next watch. At night, your smartwatch tracks your sleep, nudging you toward healthier habits.

All of this feels ordinary now, yet behind the scenes, it is Artificial Intelligence (AI) quietly shaping your day.

Flashback: From Idea to Reality

AI wasn’t always this familiar. In the 1950s, Alan Turing asked the world a daring question: “Can machines think?” That spark lit decades of research.

• Early Days: Computers learned to play chess and solve puzzles.
• 1980s–1990s: Expert systems helped industries automate decisions.
• 2000s: The internet era brought data driven AI, search engines, spam filters, and recommendations.
• 2010s onwards: Machine learning and deep learning transformed AI into a powerful force, powering self driving cars, medical diagnostics, and voice assistants.
What began as science fiction is now the invisible engine of modern life.

Sarbat.AI: Punjab’s Bold Leap

Punjab has written a new chapter in this story. Under the Sarbat.AI initiative, the state has become the first in India to introduce AI as a mainstream subject from Class I to XII.
This is not just an education reform; it is a revolution. Sarbat.AI ensures that every child, whether in a bustling city or a quiet village, learns the language of tomorrow.

Scale of Transformation

• 25,172 schools across Punjab.
• 31.5 lakh students to benefit.
• 12,424 teachers trained in Phase I, with plans to train over 2 lakh more.

This is a system wide transformation, not a pilot project.
Curriculum with Global Vision

The curriculum draws inspiration from Singapore, Finland, UAE, and USA, and aligns with UNESCO’s Ethical AI Framework.

• Primary Classes (I–VII): Fun, interactive modules introducing creativity and problem solving.
• Secondary Classes (VIII–XII): Integration into Computer Science with coding, projects, and real world applications.
Learning will be practical, ethical, and age appropriate.

Teaching Methods and Partnerships

Students will learn through live classes, recorded lectures, hackathons, and continuous assessments via a dedicated LMS.
Punjab has partnered with Google, Intel, Canva, FA AI, and Neeev AI to provide tools and training. Schools are being equipped with computers, smart panels, and digital resources, ensuring equal access for all.

Humanising the Vision

Picture a rural student building a chatbot to help farmers with crop advice. Imagine a teenager designing an app for visually impaired peers. Visualise classrooms where children debate the ethics of AI, learning to balance innovation with responsibility.
This is not just about coding, it is about empowering young minds to dream, innovate, and lead.

Leadership Voices

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains captured the spirit: “Every child, city or village, will learn the skills the world’s leading nations are racing to teach.”
Former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia praised Punjab for setting a national benchmark, highlighting how AI can also strengthen examination integrity and prevent paper leaks.

From Green Revolution to AI Revolution

Punjab once fed the nation through the Green Revolution. Today, it is preparing to lead India into the AI Revolution.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence has travelled from science fiction to smartphones, and now into Punjab’s classrooms. Through Sarbat.AI, Punjab is preparing its children not just to adapt to the future, but to shape it.

This initiative is more than an education reform. It is a social transformation, ensuring that every child, from Class I to XII, learns the language of tomorrow.
